If you are planning an Ausbildung in Germany, the Goethe B1 exam is probably the biggest hurdle between you and your visa. Germany normally expects B1 German for the vocational training visa, and the German embassy in Yaoundé wants all four parts of the exam passed. Most Cameroonian candidates take the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. This guide explains how the exam really works, roughly what it costs in Yaoundé, and how to prepare without wasting months or money.
Why B1 matters so much for an Ausbildung
An Ausbildung is a dual vocational training: you work in a company and attend the Berufsschule (vocational school) for part of the week. Everything happens in German: your colleagues, your customers, your classes and your final exams.
For the § 16a visa (the vocational training visa), German at B1 level is required “normally”, with exceptions such as a planned preparatory language course. In practice, almost every file includes a B1 certificate.
The embassy in Yaoundé is specific about three things:
- only certificates from ALTE member bodies count: Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF and ECL;
- all four modules must be passed;
- the oldest module should be no more than one year old when you apply, and modules may come from different providers.
That one-year rule catches people out. If you pass B1 too early and your file is delayed, your certificate can become too old for the visa. Plan your exam date around your expected visa application. The full list of papers is on our page about Ausbildung documents, and the visa rules are in the § 16a visa guide.
The official Goethe-Zertifikat B1 format
The exam is shared by the Goethe-Institut and ÖSD (it is called the Goethe/ÖSD-Zertifikat B1). It has four modules. The exam regulations in force since 1 September 2025 set these durations:
| Module | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Lesen (reading) | 5 parts, 30 items | 65 minutes |
| Hören (listening) | 4 parts, 30 items | about 40 minutes |
| Schreiben (writing) | 3 short texts | 60 minutes |
| Sprechen (speaking) | 3 parts, usually with a partner | about 15 minutes, plus 15 minutes preparation |
The three written modules take about 165 minutes in total, with a break of at least 15 minutes between modules. The speaking exam is normally done in pairs in front of two examiners. A one-on-one exam (about 10 minutes) is only used in exceptional cases.
Lesen and Hören: count your correct answers
In reading and listening, each correct answer is worth one point out of 30, which is then converted to a score out of 100. In plain terms, you need 18 correct answers out of 30 to reach 60 points. With 17 you get 57 points and fail the module. Use that when you practise: on a mock exam, aim for 21 or 22 correct answers so you have a safety margin.
Schreiben: three texts, three styles
In the official model exam you write:
- a personal email to a friend (about 80 words, 20 minutes);
- your opinion on a social topic in an online forum (about 80 words, 25 minutes);
- a more formal email, for example to a teacher or a superior (about 40 words, 15 minutes).
Two graders mark your writing independently. If one puts you above 60 and the other below, and the average is under 60, a third grader looks at it.
Sprechen: plan, present, answer
The speaking exam starts with a short warm-up that is not graded. Then:
- Teil 1: you plan something with your partner (a party, a visit, a present);
- Teil 2: you present a topic for about three minutes, using your preparation notes;
- Teil 3: you answer questions from your partner and the examiner about your presentation.
You may use the notes you made during the 15 minutes of preparation.
The pass mark: 60 points per module
Each module is scored out of 100. You pass a module with 60 points or more. Ratings run from “ausreichend” (pass, 60 to 69) up to “sehr gut” (very good, 90 to 100).
The key point: the exam is modular. You can take all four modules together or separately, and resit only the one you failed. The official regulations say modules can be taken or retaken as often as the exam centre has capacity.
For the visa you still need all four modules passed, with the oldest under one year. If you fail speaking in March and pass it in June, it is the dates of your other modules that matter for the one-year limit.
Where to take B1 in Cameroon and what it costs
The Goethe-Institut Kamerun is in Yaoundé, in the Bastos neighbourhood. You register online through its exam webshop, then pay the exact amount within the deadline. If you do not pay in time, your booking is cancelled. On exam day you must show your original ID document.
Be careful with fees. A 2025 exam calendar from the Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé listed about 130,000 XAF for all four modules and about 40,000 XAF per module for resits, with a lower rate if you took a Goethe-Institut course within the last six months. Fees change from one session to the next, so always confirm the current price on the Goethe-Institut Kamerun page or with the exam office before you pay.
If you live in Bamenda, Buea, Douala or Bafoussam, add transport and possibly a night in Yaoundé to your budget. The embassy also accepts telc and ÖSD certificates, but we found no official list of their exam centres in Douala or Bafoussam. Ask the provider directly.
Watch out for “original” certificates sold online without an exam. That is fraud. The embassy can refuse the visa immediately and enter you in a warning database. Our anti-scam charter explains how to spot these offers.
How to prepare for each module
Lesen
- Read a short German text every day: adverts, emails, simple news articles.
- Practise finding one precise piece of information without understanding every word. That is what the exam tests.
- Watch the clock: 65 minutes for 5 parts. Do not get stuck on one item.
Hören
- Listen to real German: radio, slow podcasts, station announcements.
- Do the official Goethe practice tests under exam conditions, without pausing.
- Read the questions before the audio starts so you know what to listen for.
Schreiben
- Learn a handful of fixed phrases: “Liebe Anna”, “Sehr geehrter Herr Müller”, “Viele Grüße”, “Mit freundlichen Grüßen”.
- Answer every point in the task. A missing point costs a lot.
- Respect the word count. A text that is too short loses marks.
Sprechen
- Prepare your self-introduction in German: name, town, school, Ausbildung plans.
- Practise in pairs, as in the real exam. React to your partner (“Das ist eine gute Idee, aber...”).
- For Teil 2, keep the structure: introduction, your own experience, the situation in Cameroon, pros and cons, conclusion.
A realistic preparation plan
If you already have a solid A2, expect several months of regular work before you try B1. Our article on how long it takes to learn German to B1 covers the full path from zero.
A sample plan for the last eight weeks:
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Full mock exam to find your weakest module |
| 3 to 5 | Targeted work on that module, plus 30 minutes of reading and listening daily |
| 6 | Second mock exam, timed |
| 7 | Speaking practice in pairs, three times that week |
| 8 | Light revision, sleep, travel to the centre planned |
At ILC, our German classes in Bafoussam and Douala train you on this exact format with mock exams. See German courses in Cameroon for details.
Frequently asked questions
Is B1 enough for every Ausbildung?
B1 is the general level expected for the visa. Some companies prefer a higher level, especially in jobs with a lot of contact with customers or patients. That is not an official rule, but the better your German, the better your chances in interviews.
How long is my B1 certificate valid for the visa?
Goethe certificates do not expire, but the embassy in Yaoundé expects your oldest module to be no more than one year old. In practice, your B1 must be recent when you apply.
Can I combine a Goethe module with a telc module?
Yes. The embassy accepts modules from different providers, as long as all of them are ALTE members and all four skills are passed.
What happens if I fail only one module?
You resit just that module. The others remain valid, within the one-year limit the embassy applies for the visa.
